The plate is placed in front of you and you cut into a steak cooked to absolute perfection. Best of all, you cooked it yourself. You don't have to be a professional chef: we give you the best kitchen tips – and here you'll learn to cook the perfect steak with a simple trick, without having to compare the steak's firmness to your hand or cut it open to see what it looks like inside.
We'll teach you to cook the perfect medium steak – every time!
You might be thinking, how do I do that?
It's actually a very simple method that will leave you and your guests happy and satisfied every time you serve a steak.
With our ONYX COOKWARE™ frying pans, you don't need to use extra fat, as the pans are designed to use the steak's natural fat by retaining heat well.
You'll need:
- Your ONYX COOKWARE™ frying pan
- Coarse salt
- A good steak in your preferred thickness
Preheat the frying pan at the heat setting you'll use throughout cooking. ONYX COOKWARE™ frying pans can be used on all types of hobs. Use medium-high heat. On hobs with a 1-9 scale, this is usually 7. You can experiment with the heat to find the perfect setting for your particular hob.
While the frying pan is preheating, add coarse salt to the pan. It must be coarse rather than fine, as this lifts the steak slightly off the pan, giving it the perfect seared crust. Then place the steak in the preheated frying pan.
After 2-3 minutes, the underside will have developed the desired caramelised crust. It is IMPORTANT to turn the steak only once! If you're curious, you can lift the steak slightly to look underneath, but let that side finish cooking before turning it.
Now listen closely, because here's the actual trick. When should you take the steak out of the frying pan? When the other side is caramelised too? When it has a seared crust? Or when it feels a certain way? No, what you need to do is watch for juices or blood coming up through the steak. That's your sign to set the steak aside to rest on a rack for 5 minutes. The rack helps the juices drain away from the steak so it isn't swimming in them on the plate. You don't need a stopwatch or to commit the ultimate sin – cutting into the steak to check it before it's done!
That's it! Now you have the perfect medium steak – every time!
Does this trick work for steaks of all thicknesses? Yes, but of course, the thicker your steak, the pinker it will be when you follow this method. As a rule, people who prefer their steak pink also tend to like a thick steak. All meat lovers can use this method to achieve consistent results with every steak.
